QUARTZO
Quartzo é um mineral composto de átomos de silício e oxigênio em uma estrutura contínua de SiO4 tetraedros de silício-oxigênio, com cada oxigênio sendo compartilhado entre dois tetraedros, dando uma fórmula química geral de SiO2. O quartzo é o segundo mineral mais abundante na crosta continental da Terra, atrás do feldspato.
Os cristais de quartzo são quirais e existem em duas formas, o normal-quartzo e o de alta temperatura-quartzo. A transformação de α-quartzo para β-quartzo ocorre abruptamente a 573 ° C (846 K). Como a transformação é acompanhada por uma mudança significativa no volume, ela pode facilmente induzir a fratura de cerâmicas ou pedras que passam por esse limite de temperatura.
Existem muitas variedades diferentes de quartzo, várias das quais são pedras semipreciosas. Desde a antiguidade, as variedades de quartzo têm sido os minerais mais comumente usados na fabricação de jóias e esculturas em pedras, especialmente na Eurásia.
